The Real Man Food

IN MEN'S HEALTH

When it comes to men’s health, incorporating power foods into a diet can help burn fat, build muscle, reduce cancer risk and improve overall health.

When it comes to incorporating power foods into a diet, however, meal planning can be tricky. To get the most out of each meal and snack, try to plan meals and snacks around the following foods:

  • Whole grains are an excellent source of complex carbohydrates and fiber, which can help lower cholesterol. For breakfast, oatmeal can provide this dietary punch. For other meals, whole grain breads can be a valuable source of nutrients.
  • Leafy greens, such as spinach, are rich in vitamins, which can reduce stroke risk. Fish and other lean meats will pack on protein vital for healthy muscle growth.
  • Almonds are an excellent option for snacks. Popping a few can provide your body with omega-3 fatty acids, which are essential for heart health.

Developing menus around these and other super foods can help you live healthier and perhaps even reach desired fitness goals.

The Better Brown Bag Lunch

Packing a lunch for the office is the perfect way to save a few bucks. Making your own lunch, however, can also help ensure that your midday meal has all the nutrition necessary to keep your body going. To revamp your brown bag lunch, follow these simple steps:

  1. The basics of bread. White bread contains processed flour that offers little nutritional value and high amounts of carbohydrates. Instead, make your sandwich using whole grains. Whole wheat bread, pitas and bagels are much more wholesome and provide essential nutrients. Can’t get used to the taste? Ease into it with white-wheat breads.
  2. Go green. Lunches don’t always have to revolve around a sandwich. Salads can be prepared quickly, and different combinations of veggies and proteins can be nutritious and delicious.
  3. Make a plan. Planning your lunches ahead of time will keep your pantry stocked. When you have all the items necessary to make your lunch, you will be less like to eat fast food.
